Gum Disease: Direct Link to your overall Health

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is caused by a bacterial buildup, called plaque, around the teeth and gums. Most patients are unaware they have gum disease as the signs and symptoms of gum disease are not painful and are easily ignored. Recent studies have shown a direct link between the existence of gum disease and an increased chance of heart disease, stroke, pancreatic cancer, and dementia.   Dr. Austin’s hygiene staff takes this disease very seriously and will design a program specifically tailored to your individual needs.
Proper oral hygiene, daily dental care, which would include brushing and flossing, and regular dental checkups will minimize the risk of gum disease. Unfortunately, periodontal-related problems are often discovered after they have persisted for an extended period of time. Gum disease ranges from mild (gingivitis) to moderate (periodontitis) to the severe (periodontosis). Treatments are available for every case of gum disease.

Common signs and problems associated with gum disease:

Bleeding gums when brushing and flossing

  • “Long” teeth (receding gums exposing the root portion of your teeth)
  •  Discolored or deteriorating tooth structure
  •  Bone loss between the teeth
  •  Loose teeth and eventual tooth loss
